About Your Teacher:
Mary Tassell
With a
background working for the NHS in biomedical sciences, Mary qualified as a
herbalist in 2000, after completing The College of Phytotherapies professional
course. Since this time Mary has practised as a herbalist in Bedfordshire,
Newcastle upon Tyne and finally Dorset, where she is now living happily.
Mary runs a
practice from a clinic in her local town and is a past director for the
National Institute of Medical Herbalists. She has taught at a number of
training schools for herbalists over the years, as well as teaching Anatomy and
Physiology to degree level at The Northern College of Acupuncture.
She has been
published in both the journal Herbs, Spices and Medicinal Plants;
Processing Health Benefits and Safety (2020), and in Pharmacognosy
Reviews (2010). More recently she co-authored the book Native Healers;
Foundations in Western Herbal Medicine with renowned herbalist Anita Ralph.
MSc, FNIMH, MCPP.
Mary is
currently pleased and excited to be working with Anita again on the first
Advanced Foundation Course in Western Herbal Medicine, which will be offered by
Heartwood at the beginning of 2024. She previously co-authored the Foundation
Course in Western Herbal Medicine with Anita, for which Native Healers is an
accompanying text.
Mary has ran
many walks and talks on herbal medicine over the years, and is very passionate
about educating people about both the benefits and accessibility of herbal
medicine, including domestic herbal medicine. She is keen to dispel the many
myths and misunderstandings concerning this valuable and important healing
modality, which she believes is in many respects instinctive and to which
everyone should have a right of access.
Helping people
to help themselves is core to her belief system. Herbal medicine is
exceptionally good at this, and it dovetails with care of and respect for the
natural world, of which she is also passionate.
‘There is
nothing that cannot be helped, and whole plant medicines are willing allies in our
pursuit of this truth’.
