Hawthorn -Myth, Magic and Medicine

Keen on learning more about Hawthorn  a plant we see so often in everyday life? Then this is the course for you!

  • Do you know about the different species of Hawthorn?

  • Have you heard of the connections between Hawthorn sex and death?

  • Are you aware that Hawthorn can be used to heal your emotions as well as your cardiovascular system?

Hawthorn - Myth, Magic & Medicine

During this 60 minute talk, Mary will delve deep into the plant we know so well.

Introduction

Mary will introduce you to hawthorn itself, outlining background information such as differing species, distribution and other interesting facts.

Myth and Magic

Here Mary will introduce a bit of Goddess energy, some of which you may be familiar with, and some less so. To complement this, together you will also look at the masculine aspects of hawthorn and how that is represented in mythology. Other areas will include Fairy thorns and Holy wells, seasonal associations and (of course) a bit of sex and death!

Medicine

Mary then will take you on to an appreciation of hawthorns medicinal actions. The therapeutic benefits of hawthorn regarding the cardio-vascular system are by now well documented, and cannot be overlooked, but Mary will be taking the opportunity to broaden your scope of practice and look at the wider uses of this awesome plant. After a brief overview of the cardiovascular benefits of hawthorn, she will stray into other medicinal territories, looking at other body systems as well as considering healing for the emotions as well as the physical body.

If anyone else has a particular aspect of therapeutic use that has not been covered and that they would like to share Mary would love to hear from you on the live. Audience participation and the sharing of wisdom is greatly encouraged.

Mary Tassell

With a background working for the NHS in biomedical sciences, Mary qualified as a herbalist in 2000, after completing The College of Phytotherapies professional course. Since this time Mary has practised as a herbalist in Bedfordshire, Newcastle upon Tyne and finally Dorset, where she is now living happily.

Mary runs a practice from a clinic in her local town and is a past director for the National Institute of Medical Herbalists. She has taught at a number of training schools for herbalists over the years, as well as teaching Anatomy and Physiology to degree level at The Northern College of Acupuncture.

She has been published in both the journal Herbs, Spices and Medicinal Plants; Processing Health Benefits and Safety (2020), and in Pharmacognosy Reviews (2010). More recently she co-authored the book Native Healers; Foundations in Western Herbal Medicine with renowned herbalist Anita Ralph. MSc, FNIMH, MCPP.

Mary is currently pleased and excited to be working with Anita again on the first Advanced Foundation Course in Western Herbal Medicine, which will be offered by Heartwood at the beginning of 2024. She previously co-authored the Foundation Course in Western Herbal Medicine with Anita, for which Native Healers is an accompanying text.

Mary has ran many walks and talks on herbal medicine over the years, and is very passionate about educating people about both the benefits and accessibility of herbal medicine, including domestic herbal medicine. She is keen to dispel the many myths and misunderstandings concerning this valuable and important healing modality, which she believes is in many respects instinctive and to which everyone should have a right of access.

Helping people to help themselves is core to her belief system. Herbal medicine is exceptionally good at this, and it dovetails with care of and respect for the natural world, of which she is also passionate.

There is nothing that cannot be helped, and whole plant medicines are willing allies in our pursuit of this truth’.
